I want to become an electrician but what qualifications do i need? (UK)?

my hubby is an electrician, IBEW 102
the exam to enter the electricians union here is difficult, lots of algebra, some calculus.
he had taken engineering classes in university, so it helped him greatly

I was recently accepted into the electrician course at my local college in nova scotia. I was wondering if anyone could give me details on the trade, like is it difficult work? is the work steady or slow in canada? what can i expect? any details at all would help. thank you

Need help………urgent Periodic inspection and testing?

Ok 1 week ago I had a new boiler fitted but because of this the electrician found faults with the electrics, he said the house was unsafe as the electric wires were sitting on the water pipe and the house was not earth bound (his words not mine) he said only opition is full house re-wire but I was also told by a different electrician about Periodic inspection and testing but when I have looked it up on internet websites say it is only valid for non-domestic buildings ?!?!?
So now Iam really confused as what needs to be done and what is going to be the safest (and I am wanting to put the house on the market next year) ……..can anybody give me advice? much appericated

no its not just for non domestic buildings, its all buildings with an electrical supply,
basicly its a check of your whole electrical installation.
for the 1st electrician to say the house needs a whole rewire, without doing such an inspection is wrong.
you may just need remedial work to get you up to current regs.
eg, moving the wire that is touching said pipe, by means of mechanically fixing into place.
earth 'bound'….is acually just calling bonding
which is the connection of your metal pipework, towel rails/heater/radiators to the earthing system, this IS for your safety.
(technically there is no such thing as earth bonding) the two words are not used together in this industry
earthing is a seperate issue and it get very technical to quote
tnc, tt, tncs pme systems would not mean much to most, but to a spark, then we know that they are 4 different types of earthing system.

but as said in other responses, get a couple of more quotes, dont get ripped off, BUT..
dont expect decent electricians to be cheap, (cowboys may be but ARE unsafe), you are paying for their expertise and knowledge and worth every penny for your piece of mind and safety.
and as you are putting the house on the market next year then it is all the more important to get a part p registered spark in to sign off his works

one more tip..
self employed sparks tend to be cheaper (less overheads)
more reliable and workmanship will be better as they have their own reputation to uphold and not a big high falooting company's

Becoming a residential or commercial electrician?

I have taken upon myself to ask around in technical schools and apprentice programs what they have to offer. I want to make sure that I am not wasting money/time.

Should I take SCIT (http://boxstr.com/files/4582409_zxvsg/05005370B901.gif) which they charge around $14,000 for their 7 month training or consider an apprentice program like the IBEW Local 441 which have their program http://www.ocett.org/news.php

Am I taking the correct steps into becoming a licensed electrician?

Please any experience electrician advice

This is only my opinion, but this is how I started as an electrician. I started off as a helper for a local contractor, and quickly worked my way up from residential, to commercial, to industrial. Then they paid for me to go to school and I became an industrial controls technician. I did all of this within two years.

**edit** Not saying you'll get the same results but I live in NC, I started as a helper for $7.25 per/hour. At the end of those two years I was making $16 per/hour.

i think i want to be a sports marketer but i heard the job oppurtunities are very limited. other career i was thinking about was industrial electrician but i heard its physical work as much as brik laying people. also if i were to be a sports marketer it would be ard for me to get a job because i am probably going to take marketing COLLEGE course for 3 years so people who went to univeristy has a bettter chance then me. please help

it is all in your attitude
if you can show you are more hungry for that career than anyone else - you will not only be more successful in getting that job but also doing that job

2004 td5 has a problem starting usually takes about 3 turns of the key air getting in the system somwhere?

been into the auto electrician and also had full service but could not find the fault .once it starts it runs perfect if stopped for 5mins it still takes about 3 turns to start it again. At one stage it went ok for about 3 weeks but then went back to not starting.any suggestions needed cheers

Struggling to start then running fine suggests something specific to starting, so assuming that the "td5" means it's a diesel, get the glow plugs checked. They do degrade with with age. That was the problem with a diesel I have.

(I am assuming that it turns over vigorously on the starter, otherwise look at starter motor and/or battery.)

If you hired an electrician he/she needs to be a licensed master electrician.
A journeyman can only do work under a master's license.
So check to see if he/she is licensed, insured & bonded by the State your in.

I recently graduated with electrical and computer engineering degree , What kinda entry level jobs do you think I should apply for ?

Just go do a bunch of interviews at companies in which you have an interest. Many of them likely will not be listed on caree websites.

During those interviews you will likely learn things about companies and about yourself that you did not know. You will discover something that strikes your interest. One or more of them might even offer you a starting job.

Something will fall into place. Keep your prospects open. For example, I was talking to a grandparent of one of my kids friends recently. He had something to do with QT ( a gas station chain). Turns out he was in charge of all the electrical designs for the chain and had EE students as interns. Who would have thought!
