Our house is really old. We got our wires checked about 20 years ago. Lately I've been experiencing some power problems but Edison said it's occurring outside. I worry though that I end up with a faulty wire and the house ends up burning down or something. It's just my own big fear. So how often to you guys get an electrician or some professional to come check your wires inside your house?

A good rule of thumb is to have your house inspected every 5 years.Keeping in mind that intenational remodelers code states that everytime remodeling occurs ALL wiring MUST be replaced. Although, this isn't standard practice.Wiring must be checked and replaced due to it being like everything else……it isn't built to last forever. Substandard and subquality wire can be frayed inside the casing and all it takes is 1 short to start an electrical fire. Better safe than sorry.

There is no regular check-up of wiring that I'm aware of, but with the power demands of many electronic devices now a days, it may not hurt to have an electrician come out and test your wiring. It very well may need upgrading.

Once, during closing inspection and then whenever we're doing remodeling involving an electrical appliance. Like when we had our oven replaced we found some old aluminum wiring we had replaced.

All depends on how old, are we talking about black wires on ceramic post nailed to the ceiling in your basement Not a real need to check. They are what they are. If you are having problems it is could be due to you buying more electrical Items or larger ones as time goes on. You should look into up grading. Run a few new lines here and there especially the kitchen. Wires only hold so much amperage and dry up when heat up. But than Edison said it was out side not relevant.to your house. What did the electrician say 20 years ago. The fuses are pretty much your safety check they don't blow wires don't heat up. If they start blowing find out why. The mayger cause of electrical fire is a bad connection or fuse that didn't blow on time. All connections should be in a box with a cover. If some one put an oversize fuse or breaker the wire will over heat. If you had someone look at it and you were ok then you are now. unless someone Did something.diffrent.

Please purchase a Auto Main line tester.( it may be a spike tester also more costly but the one I say is like a 3 pin plug.)
It has on the top one Black Egg shaped Mark.
Below it there is a Egg shaped white circle.
A line is drawn below this all through.
Now you see 3 egg shape circles, white in the center and black at both sides.By it's side it is written all OK.
Check with this 3 pin plug tester in all plug points in every socket of your house, hold only the plastic body please. If you do not get this sign it means something is wrong, like
1)Ground Open with one black circle and 2 white by it's side.
2)Neutral Open with 2 white circles and a black circle in the end.
    3) 2 Black circles with one white at the end Indicting Line and Neutral Reversed.
    4) One white and 2 Black by it's side which means Line and Ground Reversed.
5)3 black circles which means Line and Neutral Reversed and Ground Open.
6)3 white circles which means line is open.
It may be red lights showing instead of egg shaped circles.
If you do not get all OK as per (1) get a electrician and he will tell you what is wrong and will set it with a screw driver and Cutting Player.
Mean while do not use anything except lights, they work in any order.
