Are there any UK expat electricians working in the USA, i need some info???
Im a UK qualified electrician and am soon to emigrate over to the USA(New Jersey/Pennsylvania). I have all the visas, its just work that im a bit worried about. I have my UK city and guilds qualifications and want to know whether I can use these over in the US or will i have to take their exams/courses etc. (not to keen on having to take a 2/3 year course again!!)
Also would be interested in how much work there is at the moment, i read everywhere recession is about to grip America, these are worring times. I work mainly on commercial installations rather than doing domestic work.
Any info you could give me would be most grateful.
Cheers
Sitting your exams again is the way forward as they use a different system to the UK. This is not a problem as there are many colleges that can fast track you through this.
Visit the Pennsylvania/New Jersey state website and read up on Careers. they will have links to study up on. Get a job as a electricians laborer to get contacts whilst you study.
If you look for contractors in these two states and start to apply now you will save a lot of time and who knows you may get a job that will pay for your college before you leave for the USA. Good luck, any more help needed email me

I think you may need to take an exam, most jobs in your field are union so you would have to join the union.
Why don't you try and get a service job in industry as an electrician doing service and repairs to electrical equipment.
Construction work is really bad just now due to a recession.
I'm surprised you can emigrate here without a job already setup for you.
I emigrated here 28 years ago, but had a job waiting on me.
Good luck to you.
