It all depends on where you live! every state, town or village has specific laws.
In general you can run business as properioter or setup a corporation. In either case you need to inform state/village that you do such business and yes you need to file tax return.
Where do you located? Email me if you need more help

im an apprentice electrician. people always say electrical is the best paid and best working conditions trade. but if so, why are most electricians going around in old vans and seem to not have much money? i want to start my own business some day, and do not want to work in industrial, just comercial and domestic residential ect. can i make money in this? why are others seeming to not make much money?
Electricians can make some serious cash. Get in the union which will pay for all of your classes to become a journeyman someday after you have paid your dues you can break out and do your own thing. But a union has some serious benefits no matter the bad rap it takes. You can retire sittin pretty. Electricians drive vans for the same reasons concrete guys drive concrete trucks, it is a work vehicle. Me electrician just bought his wife a new Lexus SUV.
