Finding and using an Electrician (UK)?

Posted by admin On October - 31 - 2008

I'm currently doing some home improvements and will need an electrician.

What's the best way of finding an electrician?
How easy is it to get hold of an electrician?
Whats the average cost of a house re-wire?

Thanks,

Matt

word-of-mouth every time.
Most electricians will be booked a month ahead.
Rewire costs 3-3,500 for a 3-bedder, depending on what is required. cookers, showers, extractors, downlights, o/side lights.
Use either a Part P registered person or notify building control and use anybody, (even yourself)

New Career Opportunity(electrician)?

Posted by admin On October - 31 - 2008

I got a call from my local electrician union about thier apprenticeship program. Saying I was accepted into it if I want to take the opportunity.

Sounds nice but around here the top pay is seems to be roughly $20 an hour, and I would be starting off at around $11 an hour (what the fact sheet they gave me when I interviewed with them), I currently make about $14 an hour and If I wanted to move up I could make $20+ an hour with in 5-10 years which it would take about 5 years if not even more to break even $18 dollars an hour.

Another program I have been looking into is a lineman program offered by a local company that powers 45% or more of my state, they will pay for school and will have a job with them starting around $18 an hour (after all the schooling) and seems that once you get 5 year of exp you can easily make 30+ an hour, I am not in bad shape and could pass the climbing and get into the program and pass the schooling as well.

I would love anyone view on this
One major problem with the Union is that I am afraid that I could easily be inbetween jobs for months. While with the local power company they are really hurting with workers and everything is paid( schooling, clothing etc), Also would seem that I would have a steady 40 hours week with call ins and whatnot if a problem would occur
Mostly wrong about the top being 20 dollars an hour but it is atleast 10-15 dollars less and alot safer then line work

When I worked for other people I was a staunch union member. Having a job is never stable. Employers never pay you what your worth. There are those that have discovered a plan B. Go to push.topgunsuccess.com

What does bonded mean for electrical contractor?

Posted by admin On October - 31 - 2008

When someone is bonded there is a guarantee that the work will be completed as per the contract. If the job is not done as per the plan or it's not up to code and another person is hired to fix, the bonding company will pay for this. Then they go after the person who did the subpar work to begin with. Therefore the bonding company really doesn't lose out.

What quals do you need to be a self employed electrician?

Posted by admin On October - 31 - 2008

Im already an electrician on a chemical site and hold NVQ level 3 in electrican engineering, ONC and HNC in electrical studies also. Work believe im fully compatent therefore i dont need C and G quals, but do i need these if i wish to go self employed at a domestic level?
I should add that this is for UK only.

In Canada, you MUST have journeyman status to work as an electrician. This involves classroom instruction as well as on-the-job training and then two years as an apprentice before you can write the exams to obtain status as a journeyman.

Since you're currently employed and not a licensed journeyman, I can only assume you're working under another electrician's ticket. Should you screw up, it's he/she that will take the fall.

Good Luck

22 years old, Working on a 16 month Associate degree in residential and commercial electricity construction and maitainence. The school claims to being able to line me up with a job upon graduation. Is there good potential in this? Or should I apply at IBEW after graduating? Advice needed from a beginner electrician.

Unless you want to work non-union then take the job after the schooling. If you want a career, then apply to the IBEW your area, show them your training certificate and become an apprentice journeyman wireman. You may even qualify to take the journeyman exam.
Consider the benefits, the salary, and the retirement plan of the IBEW compared to a non-signatory contractor. Check out the IBEW website at www.ibew.org.

•Industrial Electrician—ONT/IP (RED SEAL)

but iam not able to get the job in industry. i am register with workopolis and monster.ca also. i live in calgary, alberta, canada. can you tell me any cover letter and resume builder site (FREE web site) and any other job hunting web site. i dont mind to relocate.

we have 100 amp service fuses. Is this ok to be done and do we have to notify Energy Australia and get them to check it out?

I don't know about Australia but as a general rule for electrical safety I new load any circuit above 80% of what the max rating is. An 80 amp circuit on a 100 amp panel may need more evaluation. I would get a second opinion.

Who builds the designs of an electrical engineer?

Posted by admin On October - 31 - 2008

If I became an electrical engineer, would I be able to build my own designs or do I just make them and somebody else does the work?

It depends on the scale of your project. If you are talking about some small circuit, you can do it yourself. If it is a system with a lot of hardware, then you will need to hire a construction contractor who is licensed for electrical work.
